It was such a happy day.

It is very difficult to write this but at the moment my life is pretty much in a state of flux as I cope with the very sudden loss of my lovely husband in April. Life will never be the same again I know but I am still taking very small steps to decide which way to go from here.

The year has been punctuated by all the "first days" without him--birthdays, 53rd wedding anniversary and now Christmas is nearly here. In a way you are ready for those things but it is the unexpected moments that catch you out like spotting the red squirrel, the nuthatch, a beautiful sunset and turning to point them out to him and he isn't there.

People talk of stages of grief but it doesn't prepare you and everyone copes in their own way. Looking back over eight months my totally overwhelming feeling is thankfulness. I am so very glad and grateful that we found and loved each other for all those years, for our family of children and grandchildren and the fun we had along the way.
I miss him so very much.
RIP my love.

It has been quite a year with one thing and another and I am afraid my blog has suffered because of it. Thanks to everyone for all the nudges to get posting again!
Things are really looking up now and a lot of loose odds and ends should be resolved soon. :o)
So it's time for a catch up!

It was our Golden Wedding Anniversary in August and on the day itself we just went up to Crummock Water and had a picnic. We have been so fortunate to have had a happy, whole half century together.

The weather was kind and there was a "glass on the water"------pure magic!

The fantastic summer we have had this year was just what was needed to get things growing again along our river wall after the rebuilding work.

Came across some white sweat shirting fabric in my stash so used some of the lovely Paisley patterns in my Bernina 830 on the fronts and back of a jacket.
I rarely use patterns for quilts but Love Entwined caught my imagination as it is based on an C18 coverlet. This is just a picture of Rosie after her operations in the summer. She didn't need a bandage over the wounds and can escape a lampshade collar so a bit of old tee-shirt was ideal for stopping the long ends of her stitches irritating her. The first two pictures are from inside! The orchid has flowered almost constantly for about six years now. It has never been potted on or fed and it gets a drink when I remember so I have been very lucky.

The house plants are thriving. I love the colours of the leaf and the flower of this pelargonium. Often one or other is more attractive or they don't quite "go". I think this is Vancouveri?

Tidying around I came across this quilt sandwich on which I was trying out some ideas. It is just a spare piece of curtain lining and an offcut of an old blanket which I sandwiched and marked out in squares about 8" across.
It is used up now ------not sure whether to keep it whole for reference or cut it up for mug rugs!

The autumn temperatures are creeping in, so time to do a little garment sewing.
This is a favourite jacket pattern that goes together so quickly and easily. These two helped me to use up some more fabric.
The first is a sort of brown marl. (That is a very straight coat hanger so it looks a little wavy!)
This one is a navy knit fabric with a bit of a pile so it looks almost like velvet.
Both very comfy and cosy. :o)
Postie delivered my three quilts back from Great Northern Quilt Show,Harrogate complete with their rosettes and awards. I knew that two of them had rosettes, but didn't know until I opened the parcel that the third one had a Judge's Merit rosette too! What a pleasant surprise!
There were also some Lilian Hedley books and a cash award too! It is raining today so maybe I can curl up and get some reading done this afternoon.

This is the third quilt which I entered ,at Harrogate, into the theme competition "Illusions". A difficult one to photograph with that black background. The colours are more true in the picture above this.

The rosettes just squeezed onto my board.
Think they are all going to have to cuddle in closer now.
:o)
The silverware I am afraid sort of disappears into a drawer.
Last Thursday evening I got a lovely phonecall to say that "Just Doodling" had won the wholecloth award at the Great Northern Quilt Show. I had great plans to go over there on Sunday but unfortunately life got in the way and I missed it so I never got to see the show or my quilts.

I read about this scheme in a magazine and also heard it discussed on various email groups so was delighted to find a really good use for some lengths of cotton. Using an assembly line method it took a very small amount of time to make these 13 little dresses.

Why not have a go yourself?

The first one was coming together but I wasn't totally happy with the way that I had done a couple of elements, although happy with the overall look. The background actually looks better in real life. I think the metallic accents in it are throwing the colour out in photos.

For this one I created my own striped fabric for the zigzag border and then applied it as one strip along each side. Instead of lines at the corners I applied little hearts cut of the same striped fabric and the daisies are 3D machine embroidered.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then my eyes saw this background fabric which very dark navy/almost black on white and before I knew it I started making a little pile of fabrics to work with it!
On this one I added some extra slashes through the main star of the compass to see if I could get a better result. The green version of the quilt took about 4 attempts before I got a compass that I could use but this one was easier to put together.
Even though there are more pieces so I only ended up with one reject this time. :o)
I will put heart into the corners again but perhaps with the points pointing towards the centre so that they are more visible.
Intriguing how different they are in different colours?

I feel like a complete newbie at this quilting lark!.

I was very taken with the 18 month BOM that Esther Aliu is running based on a coverlet from 1790. I have never done a quilt designed by anyone else or used many of the techniques used in this quilt so it is a major learning curve all round. The deciding factor was that our house dates from pre-1750 so it may well have had similar styled coverlets on the beds.

Of course even though it is mainly hand sewn my Bernina couldn't be left out so instead of appliquing little flowers I decided to add a 3D daisy chain. It is all very scrappy and I might make this into a cushion and start off again with some better co-ordinated colours (although it looks better in real life!)--------or I may stay with it and hopefully see my skills improve as the quilt grows!

Loved seeing the light hitting the quilting today.
I have spent a couple of hours ,in a good light, sewing in the tails of thread into the back. Think I have them all now. After that the quilt had to be trimmed it to square it up. I think that is the one bit of quilting that I really dislike but perhaps it is just because I am apprehensive of taking the rotary cutter to a nearly finished quilt?
.

These are my tools of choice for the sewing in of tails and general tidying up :

The tweezers ,from my Bernina 830 toolbox, are ideal for teasing out any threads that have been caught by stitching and also for holding threads so that the ends can be trimmed very close to the fabric.

The scissors were an Ebay purchase. They are very pointed and also have stayed sharp
.
The black handled tool on the right is a Clover Soft Touch Thread Pic. It has a very fine, crochet type hook similar to a tambour needle. Sometimes I use it for pulling the threads down into the batting, but more often to tweeze out any errant dark threads or fluff that have somehow got between the quilt top and the batting.

Lastly is a needle, threaded double ,with the ends going through the needle and the loop hanging down. Insert the needle close to the thread ends and exit an inch or two away. Pull through till just a loop remains and then tuck in the tails. Continue pulling and then trim the thread.

All I have to do now is make and attach the binding and a label. It is about six metres all round so plenty of hand stitching to look forward to. :o)
Quilting Gallery has a weekly Show&Tell event and this week it is for quilts using circles. It was a nice opportunity to give Clarice an airing and also to show these pictures that I took as she was in the making.
Oranges and yellows are still not my colours of choice but I have to admit it is a bright and cheery combination of colours and always makes me smile.
If you want to see all the quilts and even vote the link is here. You need to scroll well down the page and all the quilts can be enlarged so you can see the details.

I love the point when quilting can begin!
I have now added the fabric backing and a wool batting. All the coloured thread work has now been closely outlined with invisible thread which has stabilised the layers really well and now allows me to doodle in the "background".
All the coloured thread work was worked with the no.24 open toe free motion foot on my Bernina 830 but now I am having a change and using the BSR foot . This is how I tend to work between the two--I prefer using the 24 foot for the more detailed work and the BSR for the more flowing stuff.
I used Isacord for the coloured threads and eventually found a good colour in Madeira Polyneon for the background.

If I am not quilting/sewing/gardening or trying to be a domestic goddess (not) I am doodling and planning. This is one of those doodles!
I decided to try doing the quilt in two stages. This first stage is the "doodle" in many coloured threads which are both free motion stitched as well as a few decorative stitches from my machine.I have one layer of batting under the cotton. When this is finished I will put another layer of batting and the backing underneath and quilt through all layers.
My Bernina has a stitch counter on it and I wish I had made a note of how many stitches it has put on this week!

There is nothing to beat the sight of a carpet of "proper" bluebells! These are our native bluebells all hanging down from the side from delicate stems. We now have a whole bank of them. :o)
Not the best pictures but guess you can tell why we call him/her Lugless?
Rabbits are the bane of our life and are a real nuisance digging holes, eating the garden plants-------and breeding like rabbits!
Rosie sets off to chase them off the grass but pulls up as she gets close as they are nearly twice as big as her.
This is a half grown one---with no ears! He doesn't seem to have been injured as we have seen him since he was tiny.
Looks very weird doesn't he/she?
He delivered a large box full of all sorts of goodies won by "Northern Spring" at Uttoxeter last weekend. It was so exciting opening everything up and discovering what was there! Not showing too well are the large lengths of wide Moda backing and PFD fabric at the bottom of the hamper. Also missed off are two quilt border stencils and the engraved silver platter, certificate and red rosette!
Can you tell that I am one happy bunny? :o)

Quilt and Stitch Village have pictures and info on Facebook and also a video of the show on YouTube. (Just click on the links to see them)
Next year's theme is "Lest We Forget"------ a theme that should evoke a lot of wonderful quilts. Start thinking of what you can do now.

I received a phonecall to say that "Northern Spring" has won First Prize in the theme quilt competition at British Quilt & Stitch Village, in Uttoxeter, this weekend!
Happy dancing :o)

Excuse the fingers peeping over the top :o)
It looks a bit squinty but it is just 'cos it moved a little at the bottom when the door was opened. It is straight when hung on a wall!

This is a painted wholecloth quilt that has been in my head for years! I always thought that a dry stone wall would make a brilliant quilting project!
I took photos and looked at walls but in the end drew this one with imaginary stones starting at the bottom as a proper waller would begin. Initially the colours were very pale but I intensified them and added shadows as I went on. The wall, fields and sky are mainly coloured with Derwent Inktense pencils but Pentel Watercolor Dyes and Fabrico dual point have also been used and all the stitching was done with Bernina 830.

The dandelion from the previous posting is on the bottom right hand side. All the flowers at the bottom are the early spring flowers. Above the wall the early orange tip butterflies are dancing watched by a nest building Robin. Sheep and lambs are on the slopes where the tree has not yet come into leaf. Bottom left a little bank vole is looking for a crevice in the wall for its nest.

In view of the very late spring /long winter we have had this year perhaps I should have included a little snow in the background!
I think I might eventually make a summer and autumn version of this.

I am alternating my time at the moment between the garden and the sewing machine.

Nothing much got done in the garden after I started being unwell in July ,last year,so there are vast tracts of brambles and sycamore seedlings to clear . I can nearly see all the daffodils now! Their position will be taken by a carpet of bluebells will be here in a few weeks so I need to keep at it.

The current quilt has a few flowers too.
They were painted and coloured with Derwent Inktense pencils and Pentel water colour dyes before sewing was involved..:o)
My Bernina 830 was updated recently and is still a bit tetchy with a couple of functions but it is humming away happily stitching on this which is just free motion work with the feed dogs down.

This is an e-book that I read recently , written by Julia Brimble, the owner of the Sew Curvy site and downloaded from Vivebooks. I used to do machine embroidery for the panels of bridal corset bodices but never thought that I could attempt to make a corset from scratch. This book gives me hope!
What is unique about it is that as well as the text and lots of pictures, there are also several little videos in the book that show you exactly what to do! A brilliant idea!
The book can be read on your tablet or Kindle but you might need an app to allow the videos to play.
I also liked that the book can be downloaded and paid for via Paypal (as well as usual cards) from Vivebooks.Rosalindhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05583572682553511173noreply@blogger.com0
