A bit picture heavy but it was a lovely day!

We took a trip up to Carlisle and as it was a beautiful day we decided to come back over the road to Caldbeck.

This is proper open moorland with usually just sheep for company.

As you climb the road eventually you cross a cattle grid . Once past that you have to watch for livestock as they have freedom to wander everywhere ---------including the road.

They wander about criss crossing the road at leisure---or sometimes scaring you by dashing across suddenly. They sometimes just have a snooze in the middle of the road.

It is hard to imagine this landscape with lots of people but centuries ago the drovers used to drive their cattle  and sheep over the tops from the south as far away as Furness Abbey, from Westmorland and Cumberland, from Durham and Northumberland in the east and meet up with all the Scottish drovers near here for a huge frenzy of buying and selling prime livestock.

Fantastic views of the hills to the south and even across to Scotland.

Travelling downhill again now.

More sheep dashing across the road. They like those yellow buckets which are stocked with grit and rock salt to throw over icy wintry roads. They seem to enjoy the salt.

This is the cattle grid across the road to stop the sheep coming down into the village. Now we have to watch out for cows on the road as it is getting near milking time and they will be off to the parlour.
