This time we came home via the northern side of Bassenthwaite and along this Roman Road which used to lead to the Roman Forts at Papcastle and then on to Maryport.
The hill on the right of the road is called both Watch Hill and The Hay. From the top (only 833 feet)there are good views across the Solway to Scotland and back towards the Cumbrian fells.
It was one of the chain of hills that had bonfires on top of them ,ready to be lit as a warning if the Spanish Armada had landed.
